How-to Upload A Vertical Facebook Page or Profile Picture

If you’re still having a problem uploading your image, photo or picture to your Facebook profile or page, after reading my previous post “Posting Vertical Pictures, Images or Photos in Your Facebook Profile or Pages“, follow the steps below and you should be all set.

Why am I still getting that error when my image is under 180 pixels wide or 540 pixels high?

I tried to upload my father’s logo (image dimensions 99 pixels wide by 476 pixels high), and it didn’t work! I received the same error as before:

“Upload Failed: Your picture is too tall or too wide. Try to pick something closer to a square.”

99 x 476 OCAS Logo

99 x 476

So I researched some more and found, in Facebook Help, that profile photos cannot be three times taller, than they are wide:

“If you are having trouble adding or changing your profile picture, please note that you cannot upload a photo if it is more than three times as tall as it is wide.

So, I divided the length of my father’s logo by three and made it that width.

99 x 476 OCAS Logo

Incorrect logo size for Facebook Profile and Pages

I uploaded it, and it worked! See my father’s Facebook Page here: On Call Auto Service Facebook Page. You can see the white-space where the logo is wider than it was designed. (Edit: I changed his logo to what you see now, but you can view the example I mention here in his Profile Photos album.)

You can view my logo here: My Facebook Business Page

So as long as you keep your image within the above dimensions and ratio, you’ll be all set!

Hope this helps! I have spent days researching this, and spent about 3 hours again yesterday. I’m so happy I found the solution!

I was so excited to come upon your post after I googled how to upload a vertical fb profile photo. I am trying to upload a 500 x 165 image and am still getting the square message. Have you still been able to upload using the 1/3 ratio mentioned above? I spent so much time on this graphic it is so frustrating!

    • http://kmburck.com Kathy

      Hey Kristy,

I’m glad my post was able to help!

I assume your image is 165 pixels wide by 500 pixels high? If so, try making your graphic 165w x 495h or 167w x 501h. Images work better, with these dimensions, when they’re vertical vs horizontal.

Let me know if these suggestions help!

Awesome work dude! Worked a treat. I was starting to freak out as the only other “fix” to this problem was by a guy who, “just fixed it, Don’t know what I did exactly though”. So to come across your response means that I will never get trapped by this again.

    You are a legend!!!

  • Mindy

mine is 180×455 and every time i attempt to upload i get an error message. very frustrating.

    • http://kmburck.com Kathy

      Hi Mindy,

I don’t think it’s you. I think FB is having an issue. I was able to upload the size without a hitch (see here: http://www.facebook.com/KathyBurckhardt).

Well, not quite without a hitch. Once you upload it, hit the fresh button in your browser or on your keyboard (F5), it should then appear. I believe FB’s been having this problem since they changed the layout of FB Pages.

Let me know if the above instructions work for you.

How can i change the length of it ?!

    • http://kmburck.com Kathy

If you’re referring to the length of your image, you need an image editor like PhotoShop, Fireworks, SnagIt, etc. You can even edit it in MS Paint.

      Did I answer your question?

Hi Kathy – thank you very much. This is a helpful article. After you add your vertical profile image, do you have control over how it displays in your posts? I notice the bottom portion of yours displays, but when I place one an area near the top shows in the posts.

    • http://kmburck.com Kathy

      Hi Preston,

You’re VERY welcome! Thanks for the comments and praise.

On your Facebook page, hover over your profile pic and click on “Change Picture.” Under the image (in the next screen) click on “Edit Thumbnail.” In the pop-up window, click on the thumbnail and drag it around, the small window, til you get it where you want. Click “Save” and you’re all set. :)
