Creative Blog Posts With Good Content vs. Frequent or Rehashed Blog Posts

Question asked by Land Lubber in Colorado, to Matt Cutts of Google Webmaster Help on their YouTube channel.

“Some people are under the impression that blogs are good for SEO only if they’re updated frequently. How much does frequency play into PageRank for blogs and other dynamic sites? Isn’t the content more important than the simple number of posts per day/week?”

Matt goes on to answer “Yes, content is much more important.” But he goes on to say that frequency plays a role in keeping people engaged. But frequency without good content can hurt you. So sharing personal stories, jokes, etc. work at keeping your readers engaged, but don’t let that be the majority of your posts.

Watch the video below for more information, and post your thoughts in the comment section below.

I’m going to do my best to create creative, fresh content in the future, and hope I have, somewhat done so, so far. If not, let me know, and let me know what you’d like to see more of. Feedback is welcome!

Thanks, and happy blogging!

Why Having Social Media Networking Accounts is Not Enough…

This was sent to me via email, and the subject of the email was “Even the Dept of Defense got into social networking!”

The Chairman may have established accounts on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, iTunes, Flickr, have a blog, and have thousands of followers. He may have had content – and lots of – uploaded to each site and account, with videos, and photos included. But that alone is not a social media presence, as you can see here: Chairman’s 2010 Social Media Strategy.

People want interaction. They want a human side to your business. They want truth. That’s the purpose of Social Media. “Let me see who you really are.” That said, we all need to maintain a level of privacy, as we are, for the most part, judgmental. But we’re also more forgiving to those we see as human. So be a little transparent in your status updates: answer questions honestly (be honest if you can’t), show your fans what you like to do, let your hair down a little, briefly tell them what you and your family did that weekend, be you. It’s what your followers need.

Here is a short list of what they intend to do. You can read more in the link I provided above.

Goals for the next six to 12 Months
Having looked at how the Chairman got to this point and identified some of the shortcomings of his existing social media efforts, the following four goals will guide our efforts over the next six to 12 months.

  1. ENGAGE - Begin engaging in interactive conversations with our followers and post more personalized content about the Chairman.
  2. ALIGN - Align the content creation process for social media with the Chairman’s Top 3 Priorities, assimilate social media content creation into the existing Joint Staff processes and products, and involve the entire public affairs shop, speech writer, editors, CAG, and Aides.
  3. DRIVE - Use social media content to get in front of events, trips, and testimony to lead the discussion and focus questions.
  4. EXPAND - Continue to grow the Chairman’s online audience and identify new social media platforms to engage from.

Consider these steps when choosing your social media platform(s). And remember to have 5-10 canned responses available to your social media marketers.

However, keep in mind, canned responses can be a double edged sword. Sloppy or poorly worded responses can come across as a quick fix or with a “we don’t care” attitude. So exercise caution when creating your canned responses, and always include someone your customer can contact to discuss the situation further. Dave @GriffinTech does a great job of this on their Twitter account.

So if the Chairman (and Griffin Technology) can do it, why can’t you? ;)

Nate Riggs, Chris Brogan…The early posts

I was chatting with my brother, Carl, earlier today. I was a little down about being newly unemployed, and frustrated at my blog and writing. He mentioned Nate Riggs, Chris Brogan, and several others and asked if I had ever looked at their first posts. I hadn’t and told him so. He asked me to spend time this morning and do just that. So I did, and I was so happy to see that so many had started writing about everyday life, and things, just like myself.

Over the years they had honed their craft and topics, and today write the wonderful blogs we follow. Chris Brogan used to write about his running, training, etc. Nate wrote about things in the media that bothered him, and about a visitor that stayed with them and had a funny misunderstanding. I commented on both of their first posts and thanked them for keeping them up for people like me to see. They gave me hope.

While working on my photoblog template this evening I noticed a pop-up from Nate via TweetDeck. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. I had made HIS day with my comment and he made that his blog entry for the day. That in turn made my day. I was so humbled by his post, and excited, I texted Carl, and told him what happened. He asked me to send him the link asap.

I was at such a loss for words, that I wrote Nate this comment:

I’m so humbled by this myself! I just wish I had something more substantial on my blog, but in time. Thank you for the mention, and so glad I was able to brighten your day.

I’m in awe at your mention, but I have to mention, that I was so excited reading your tweet that I texted Carl right away. He’s on vacation, and wants to read your post right now. :)  Both he and my father pushed me towards social media, claiming that I have the gift of e-gab, and love helping others. I hope I can turn this into something amazing as you and the others have.

If you can’t already tell, Carl is my best friend, and my youngest brother. I look to him for anything related to SEO, SEM, Social Media, etc. His knowledge amazes me, and he’s been guiding me along this new journey. He’s really become a whiz at it all. He looks up to you, and the others. And he’s always speaking so highly of you. He’s the reason why I follow you and Chris B.

Thanks for making MY day Nate, may the rest of yours be fantastic!

I meant every word of it, just wish it had more finesse.

Thank you Nate!

A little AdSense, a little fruit, and a little male watching…

A little Google AdSense added to my blog, a little fruit for the palate, and Watchmen – the movie of the night.

Then off to bed I go.

Love the templates from WordPress

The templates on WordPress.com are much nicer than most I’ve seen. Let’s hope their blogging software/application is much better than others I’ve toyed with.

What do all of you think so far? Those of you of course that have been blogging with WordPress.com and several others?
