Here's an Alternative to the Issues with NetworkedBlogs on Facebook

September 15, 2010 By Kat M B 10 Comments

Earlier this year I was using NetworkedBlogs for all of the blog feeds on mine, and my clients Facebook pages.

Around July it stopped working. I posted the issue several times on “Get Satisfaction” only to be told it’s something I was doing or had done wrong. This would be true if I had changed anything in the previous blog feeds that were working, but I hadn’t.

I decided to search for another app since my clients feeds needed to be active, and couldn’t afford the downtime that was occurring. I finally found RSS Graffiti. I’ve been testing it since end of July, and I love it. I’ve now migrated all my blogs to it. The “dashboard” is fantastic too!

Check it out here: http://apps.facebook.com/rssgraffiti/

I tried posting this solution to the hundred or so others that are having the same problem, only to have it deleted twice. Their reason was “Not a question to NB.” This would have made perfect sense had I not posted it to the Solutions category.

It’s never a best practice to delete consumer posts, especially when they’re listed in the proper category.

Hope this helps, it helped me. :)

Citrus City Grille – New Facebook Page Logo, and Twitter Background

July 12, 2010 By Kat M B Leave a Comment

I finished the Facebook page logo, and Twitter background for Citrus City Grille.

You can view them live here: Twitter.com/CitrusCityGrille and Facebook.com/pages/CitrusCityGrille. Or view them below, but there’s no comparison to seeing them on the actual site.

Here is the logo on their Facebook Page:

A New Way to See If Your Facebook Profile (or Facebook Page) is Getting Hacked

July 7, 2010 By Kat M B Leave a Comment

Have you noticed this new Facebook feature? It could be what saves you from getting hacked!

Facebook recently built new systems to prevent unauthorized access to Profiles and Pages. These systems allow you to approve the devices you commonly use to log in and block suspicious logins before they happen.

Check out their latest blog post and additional online safety tips on their Facebook Security Page.

I noticed this yesterday when I logged into Facebook on my netbook, and then again when I logged in via Tweetdeck. I was sent an email twice to confirm, and one asked me to name the computer I was logging in from.

I think this is a great feature from Facebook, and will help users squash any future issues.

Thanks Facebook Team!

King of the Facebook Page

June 29, 2010 By Kat M B Leave a Comment

On June 11, 2010 – Facebook allowed admins of a page to remove other admins, including the page creator (see post here: Facebook Pages). Which has caused quite the ruckus.

I think it’s the start of a great idea. But it would be a much better idea if the creator had the option of handing the page over to an/the Admin(s).

However, I do see the point of this, as many designers seem to have a god persona and want to maintain control/ownership over their designs. That said, when a client has paid you for your services…the site, in turn, is theirs. Yes, they should still give you credit for the design, but it’s their baby to control, not yours.

I don’t think there’s a perfect way to solve this, and Facebook (in my opinion) has done what they can. It’s not their job to play babysitter or judge and jury.

What do you think?

UPDATE:

I just offered this solution to the thread. Let’s see if Facebook replies, and or complies.

Here’s a possible saving solution:

As designers of the Facebook Business Page, Page Creators, must identify the Owner(s) of the Business. The Owners, in turn, have the option of taking the Page Creators “Admin rights” away, but cannot remove them as the Page Creator.

Until of course a new Page Creator (via Admin access) has fully re-designed the Facebook Business Page. The old designer (old Page Creator), must then release the Business Page to the new Page Creator.

Sound good?

Why Having Social Media Networking Accounts is Not Enough…

June 27, 2010 By Kat M B Leave a Comment

This was sent to me via email, and the subject of the email was “Even the Dept of Defense got into social networking!”

The Chairman may have established accounts on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, iTunes, Flickr, have a blog, and have thousands of followers. He may have had content – and lots of – uploaded to each site and account, with videos, and photos included. But that alone is not a social media presence, as you can see here: Chairman’s 2010 Social Media Strategy.

People want interaction. They want a human side to your business. They want truth. That’s the purpose of Social Media. “Let me see who you really are.” That said, we all need to maintain a level of privacy, as we are, for the most part, judgmental. But we’re also more forgiving to those we see as human. So be a little transparent in your status updates: answer questions honestly (be honest if you can’t), show your fans what you like to do, let your hair down a little, briefly tell them what you and your family did that weekend, be you. It’s what your followers need.

Here is a short list of what they intend to do. You can read more in the link I provided above.

Goals for the next six to 12 Months
Having looked at how the Chairman got to this point and identified some of the shortcomings of his existing social media efforts, the following four goals will guide our efforts over the next six to 12 months.

  1. ENGAGE – Begin engaging in interactive conversations with our followers and post more personalized content about the Chairman.
  2. ALIGN – Align the content creation process for social media with the Chairman’s Top 3 Priorities, assimilate social media content creation into the existing Joint Staff processes and products, and involve the entire public affairs shop, speech writer, editors, CAG, and Aides.
  3. DRIVE – Use social media content to get in front of events, trips, and testimony to lead the discussion and focus questions.
  4. EXPAND – Continue to grow the Chairman’s online audience and identify new social media platforms to engage from.

Consider these steps when choosing your social media platform(s). And remember to have 5-10 canned responses available to your social media marketers.

However, keep in mind, canned responses can be a double edged sword. Sloppy or poorly worded responses can come across as a quick fix or with a “we don’t care” attitude. So exercise caution when creating your canned responses, and always include someone your customer can contact to discuss the situation further. Dave @GriffinTech does a great job of this on their Twitter account.

So if the Chairman (and Griffin Technology) can do it, why can’t you? ;)

Reply to Email: How to Gain Exposure on Your New Website…

April 5, 2010 By Kat M B Leave a Comment

This post in in reply to the following email:

Trying to generate some traffic for Chris Bruckner’s new website. I put it together for him for a school project. Pass it on to anyone that could possibly be interested in either having something done at their home, or business in the CT area, or if someone you think might like to see it. Also any other suggestions you have to get it noticed would be welcome. You can send those in reply directly to me and we can implement them as we go. Thanks.

Great job with the content, Chris, BUT it should be kept in the first OR third person. You’re bouncing between both on the home page. I would also remove the more personal content in the About paragraph, and keep it more business, and not so personal. Although this is extremely lengthy, it’s good for ideas: http://www.chrisbrogan.com/about/

I would also make his About a separate page, and mention what he does again, why he likes what he does, etc.

To get his site noticed, you need to have:

  • good metadata and content in place (Carl might be able to help you with this, but you already seem to have it in place.)
  • a Facebook Fanpage
  • Twitter account
  • list his business on Yelp.com, Insiderpages.com, and any other directory related to his line of work (search Google and be selective)

This should help get him started.

He should also add content to the photos explaining what he did, in as much detail as possible. Or he can maintain a blog with photos, and again, what he did for the client in detail. This will help maintain fresh content on his site, and help maintain placement in the search engines. Fresh, selective content is key. Keep in mind it can take between 3 and 6 months to be found in the search engines, so the extras above are key!

Hope this helps!
